For decades, the "perfect 10" was the iconic image of gymnastics, the flawless routine that could not be bettered. Today, gymnasts routinely score above 10, which understandably confuses casual viewers. The scoring system has changed, and understanding it reveals how the modern sport rewards both daring and precision.

Artistic gymnastics is judged, not timed or measured, which means the score reflects expert assessment of a routine's difficulty and how well it is performed. Since a major overhaul in the mid-2000s, the sport moved away from the old perfect-10 system to a two-part score that separates what a gymnast attempts from how well they execute it.

The first component is the difficulty score, often called the D-score. This measures how hard the routine is. Judges add up the values of the skills a gymnast performs, with harder elements worth more, along with bonus points for connecting difficult skills together and for meeting specific requirements of the apparatus. Crucially, the difficulty score is open-ended: there is no upper limit. A gymnast who attempts more and harder skills can build a higher D-score, which is precisely why total scores can now exceed 10. This rewards ambition and innovation, encouraging gymnasts to push the boundaries of what is possible.

The second component is the execution score, or E-score. This measures how well the routine is performed, and it works in the opposite direction. It starts at a perfect 10.0, and judges deduct points for every error: bent knees, poor form, wobbles, steps on landing, falls, and lack of control or artistry. A small flaw might cost a tenth of a point; a fall costs a full point and interrupts the flow of the routine. The cleaner and more controlled the performance, the closer the execution score stays to 10.

The two scores are then added together to produce the gymnast's total. So a routine's final mark reflects both the difficulty attempted (D-score) and the quality of the performance (E-score). This is the essence of modern gymnastics scoring: a gymnast must balance risk and reliability. Attempting an extremely difficult routine raises the potential score, but harder skills are more likely to produce execution errors, so there is a constant strategic trade-off between ambition and consistency.

The specific skills and requirements vary by apparatus. In men's gymnastics, athletes compete on six pieces: floor exercise, pommel horse, still rings, vault, parallel bars, and horizontal (high) bar. In women's gymnastics, there are four: vault, uneven bars, balance beam, and floor exercise. Each apparatus demands different strengths, from the explosive power of vault to the balance and nerve required on the beam, and each has its own particular elements and rules that judges assess.

Judging is done by panels, with separate judges assessing difficulty and execution, and systems are in place to average scores and reduce the influence of any single judge, aiming for fairness and consistency. Even so, because the sport is subjectively judged, scoring can occasionally be controversial, and small deductions can decide medals.

Understanding the two-part system transforms how you watch gymnastics. A high difficulty routine performed slightly untidily might still beat a clean but simpler one, or it might not, depending on how the numbers fall. Once you know to look for both the daring of the difficulty and the polish of the execution, you can appreciate the extraordinary balance of courage and control that defines elite gymnastics.
